The time for school to begin again is almost here, so it’s time to get prepared for your daily school drop-off or drive to work. We’ve put together a list of back-to-school safe driving tips to help you and those around you feel safer on your drive to school.
Be aware of your surroundings
Some children will be walking to school as you’re driving to work — or to drop your own child off at school — so make sure you’re always aware and alert. Pay attention to the crossing guard when you come to busy intersections, and know that children might step out from behind parked cars without looking to see if a car is coming.
Respect school bus rules
When a school bus is stopped with its lights flashing and stop sign deployed, you must remember to stop, too. Stay stopped until the bus driver pulls the bus’s stop sign back in and moves forward. Even then, remain vigilant for any potential children waiting to cross the road.
Follow school-zone speed limits
School zones have lower speed limits for a reason — to protect young pedestrians. You never know when a child might dart into the street, so going the school-zone speed limit (or even slower) is always a good idea.
